Hempsted Recycling Centre will close for 5 days in May

From 8th – 12th May, Hempsted Household Recycling Centre (HRC) in Gloucester will be closed for work to accommodate more traffic and reduce queues.

The changes will take effect in June and are being made in response to customer feedback and increased use.

The temporary closure is necessary for the work to go ahead safely, but the duration has been kept to a minimum. A second closure in June will be needed during the final stage of work; details will be communicated nearer the time.

Work includes extending the upper road area and creating a multiple lane system, as well as increasing the boundary size to accommodate heavy vehicles. The plans will also make it possible for a reuse shop to be added in the future.

Alternative recycling facilities are available at the HRCs at Fosse Cross, Wingmoor Farm, Oak Quarry and Pyke Quarry however residents may prefer to plan their visit before or after the closure dates to avoid potential queues at other sites.

The full list of household recycling centres is available on www.recycleforgloucestershire.com

This closure will not affect recycling and waste collections in Maisemore.

Trade on the River Severn

Ros Lane writes:

The March meeting of Maisemore Local History Society brought Dr Nicholas Herbert to give an excellent illustrated talk on “Trade on the River Severn in Gloucestershire”.

Along the river were numerous small Pills or harbours which enabled ships to off load and to avoid the low tides and sandbanks. Another method for off loading were the many riverside Inns along the river, details of which were illustrated by Dr Herbert. With the advent of the canals, the use of the river declined, but the sight of of the Trows passing through the countryside must have been a wonderful one .

Now the season of meetings are over, the members have three summer outings to look forward to. There is a visit to a Blacksmith, two working Mills at Nailsworth, and Rodmarton Manor.

News from the Churches

Marnie Mitchell writes:

At the first of our services for Mothering sunday, the children from Hartpury school came to St. Giles to act out thanks for their mothers.  The church was full and some of the children had made pictures of their mums whilst some sang about them individually and others read the liturgy beautifully and gave them posies.

The following Sunday a rather smaller group enjoyed Rev.Penny's sermon, the hymns and a small plant.
The Lent group and its subject "abiding" has caused much discussion. Nearly all our churches were represented and there was plenty of scope for thought.  The word "abiding" now has many more definitions than just "living, staying and trusting."

Our first wedding of the year:- the sun shone in abundance and the bride Nicola looked radiant. Beautiful singing from St.Peter's School choir and a plethora of photographers from the Gloscat photography section should certainly provide Nicola and Andy with some great memories of their day. It was especially nice to see the guests all walking down the road in the sun to the village hall with the church bells pealing out for them.

I do hope you too have enjoyed the glorious weather in early April. I have never seen snowdrops, crocus, daffodils and tulips all out in my garden at once!

It has been brought to my notice that some people do not know about the "7 parishes magazine".  This brings news of events around our local villages; fetes, concerts, sports and adverts from local tradesfolk etc. as well as church news, and all for 30p a month(£3.50 year).  Anybody who would like one delivered to their home, please contact me on tel.01452 700790. (You will also find the details inside the church)

Annual Council Meeting

The next Parish Council meeting will be the "Annual Meeting" on 8th May at 7.30pm in the committee room of the village hall.

This is, in effect, the Council's AGM, where the chairman and vice-chairman are elected and a number of other annual decisions are made.

It is also the next opportunity for two pople who care about what happens in Maisemore to join the Council, which still has two vacancies to be filled by co-option.  With only three councillors out of a potential five, it is in a precarious situation and could not hold a meeting if any existing councillor was unable to attend.

If you think you could help the village by joining the Parish Council, please contact the clerk, Diane Baldwin on 01531 650885 or email clerk@maisemore-pc.org.uk - or talk to any of the existing councillors.

Wild flowers on the approach to Maisemore

The Parish Council is hoping that it will be possible to sow wildflowers in the wide verge along the A417 on the approach to Maisemore from the Hartpury side.  There's a plan of the proposal here.

Some funding has been allocated in the Council's budget for this, but success will depend on volunteers helping with the project, which is being co-ordinated by Emma Holdaway.  You can contact her on ejholdaway@hotmail.co.uk or 07984419596.

The biggest job to start with will be scraping off the existing vegetation - and we have a head start on this because Mike Bubb - who runs Maisemore's groundworks company, Dirtworks - has offered to use his equipment to get the job done. Many thanks for that, Mike!

The wildflowers will be planted to create a bright and striking approach to our village and hopefully a reminder to motorists that they are approaching a residential area.  This will also encourage our local bee populations as the wildflowers will be nectar rich.

If you are interested in helping with this project - or you want to use your own garden or verge to help get Maisemore buzzing, please do get in touch with Emma.

Maisemore Fete - save the date

Emma Holdaway writes:
Please remember to put Monday 28th August in your diary for the Maisemore Fete!
We are looking for a few extra volunteers this year to get help with the jewellery stall, the children's races and refreshments.  We would also love to find someone who could offer face painting.
If you would like to be involved or have any other ideas for the fete, please do contact me -: ejholdaway@hotmail.co.uk or 07984 419596.
