The March meeting of Maisemore Local History Society brought Dr Nicholas Herbert to give an
excellent illustrated talk on “Trade on the River Severn in Gloucestershire”.
Along the river were numerous small Pills or harbours which enabled ships to off
load and to avoid the low tides and sandbanks. Another method for off loading
were the many riverside Inns along the river, details of which were illustrated
by Dr Herbert. With the advent of the canals, the use of the river declined, but the
sight of of the Trows passing through the countryside must have been a wonderful one .
Now the season of meetings are over, the members have three
summer outings to look forward to. There is a visit to a Blacksmith, two working
Mills at Nailsworth, and Rodmarton Manor.
