The internet is at the centre of modern life, but unfortunately many kinds of fraud go along with it. Cyber criminals seek to exploit vulnerabilities in order to steal passwords, data and money, which can have long lasting effects for victims and businesses. However you don’t need to be a computer expert to avoid becoming a victim of cyber crime. Following the tips below could help reduce your chances of becoming a victim of cyber fraud whilst still using the web safely: • App and operating system updates often contain security fixes. Download and install them as soon as you can after they become available. • Antivirus software protects your computer or device, including Macs and other Apple devices, against most viruses. Make sure you have a trusted provider and scan you devices regularly. • Backing up your important files and photos means you’ll still have them if the worst should happen to your computer or device. • Using a strong password is like locking your front door. Using three random words and different passwords for each account you have can help keep them safe. Password managers can help you keep track of your passwords and two-factor authentication can provide an extra layer of security. • Phishing can happen via email, text, phone call or letter. Treat all unsolicited communications with suspicion and if necessary, confirm their validity with the alleged sender via a trusted means, e.g. phoning the bank on the number on the back of your bank card. Be wary of links and attachments within unsolicited or unexpected emails and texts. For more information on cyber fraud: https://www.actionfraud.
